Mini Review

We have already reviewed MyPhone version 2.03.01 for S60 3rd edition devices. MyPhone has made several improvements and version 2.20 is out now. I took it out for a spin on my Nokia 5800 XPress Music, an S60 5th edition device. The touch feature is quite well implemented. The swipe to unlock the mobile is very iPhone-ish and enjoyable. There are new features on V2.20 that are fun and also of utility value.

Read on.

MyPhone now brings iPhone like SMS Conversations. This is fun to use and a close implementation of iPhone. Notice the balloons of conversations from a message sender. You also have the choice to switch to the S60 SMS  application.

A sore point with the earlier version of MyPhone was that if you wanted to add new icons for 3rd party applications, you must know the exact name of the executable file (e.g. gravity_0xA000BE97.exe for the Gravity) and write that name in the shortcut. This was painful. Its impossible to find out the name using native S60 interfaces. You need to install a task manager like JBak Tasman that displays the name of the executable. MyPhone 2.20 has made adding 3rd party applications very easy. It shows a list of applications and you can just pick one. And you also get custom icons for new shortcuts added to the MyPhone menu. There are several custom icons to choose from.

MyPhone also includes a Sketch Pad application that’s an MS Paint for the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music. That’s a cool addition.

Conclusion

MyPhone is very eye-candy on the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music provides a very elegant interface on the device. I found the touch sensitivity low and the application was not very responsive in the “My Settings” screen. Also, MyPhone doesn’t support the landscape mode. So when you rotate the mobile to the landscape mode, MyPhone automatically locks up and displays the message “rotate to unlock”. But I didn’t find this to be very stable. A few times, even when I rotated the phone to portrait mode, the screen never unlocked. MyPhone is a great shell to your touch device. MyPhone for s60 touch is good stuff and I’ll give it 4 of 5.
