“Print to Retail” empowers the DROID X to turn digital images into physical prints

Posted on July 21, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

While most people have been impressed by the screen size or the processor of the DROID X, Motorola wanted to make sure that owners of the new Android powerhouse get the best possible user experience as well.  We know, most of you are not too fond of MotoBLUR or even the dumbed down version of it that made its way on to the DROID X, but Motorola has added a few tweaks and features that we have not seen on Android phones before.

This afternoon, we got a little tip from our friends over at AndroidGuys which I was able to confirm for them with the DROID X demo unit I have been playing around with. The DROID X has a new feature which allows users to print their pictures at local shops.  While looking at a picture inside the gallery, you can select the option by pressing Menu > Share > Print to Retail.  Once the option is selected, you’ll be presented with a list of the nearest retail printing destinations.  In the Twin Cities, the only options we have available to us are CVS and Costco, but we’re pretty sure that store selection will vary by market.  If you’ve not looking to print pictures at the closest shop, you can search for other locations by zip code (this could come in pretty handy if you have parents nagging you to send them pictures of their granddaughter).

Once you select a retail location, the next screen gives you all the pertinent store information (address, phone number, and store hours) along with print pricing (between $0.13 and $0.19 for 4×6 prints). After you enter in your contact information, you’ve given the option to select the number of prints you want as well as adding other pictures to your order.  When you’re finished adding other pictures, the order total, including state tax are added up and you’re set to go.  Simply press the place order button and you should be able to pick up your prints at the local CVS store in about an hour.

The idea behind the “Print to Retail” sounds pretty simple, but it is a great way to share the pictures from the DROID X’s 8MP camera with the world.  We know, you probably already share all your picture through Facebook and Twitter, but for those among us who still like to hold pictures in our hands, having this extra option does save you the hassle of importing the pictures to your computer, uploading them to your online photo printing website and then waiting for them in the mail.  Our hope if that the selection of retailers expands to include Wal-Mart, Target and a number of other photo printing shops so that users will have more options on locations and pricing.

Have any of you had the chance to try the Print to Retail option out yet?  Let us know how it went.  We would also be curious to know how the pictures actually turned out in print form.

SCVNGR just got a little more social (and awesome)

Posted on July 21, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Back in May, we reviewed a check-in based application called SCVNGR that allows users to do quick, fun activities to interact with their social world. Though SCVNGR was deemed to be a fun new way to experience social media and check-in based services in particular, it seems the rubber hasn’t quite hit the road yet. A quick browse of the more popular local places showed one or zero check-ins in the last few months. As it stands right now, the market is showing SCVNGR in the 10-50,000 downloads category, compared to over 250,000 downloads for similar services Foursquare and Gowalla.

SCVNGR has released a new version of their application with a feature that they hope will be innovative enough to convince Android users to start using SCVNGR. The new “bump” feature allows Android users to bump their phones together to check-in to a location at the same time. This move makes check-ins on SCVNGR a more social endeavor, and is a fun way to show the world that you’re not out at a bar drinking alone!

So will this new bump feature be revolutionary enough to convince you to give SCVNGR another look? Sound off in the comments.

Note: SCVNGR still requires Android 2.0+.

eSobi Mobile: One RSS-reader app to rule them all?

Posted on July 21, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Update: Post has been updated to reflect user feedback on the price point and updated recommendations.

More and more, Android users are using their phones as a way to keep up with the latest news and information that matters to them. As one of these users, I have been frustrated by the lack of a single application that will allow me to accomplish this goal without the use of the browser (which in my opinion defeats the purpose of “mobile”).

A few weeks ago, we received a tip about an application called eSobi Mobile which hopes to do just that. eSobi Mobile is an application that allows users to manage their news articles, RSS feeds, and podcasts from within a single application. eSobi Mobile comes preloaded with several of the standard things people read: the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, PCWorld, BBC, etc. Anything else you could ever hope to subscribe to can be easily added via and RSS feed URL, or by adding sites to your Google Reader, which can be easily integrated with your eSobi Mobile application.

Having an application to manage your mobile content is meaningless unless it creates a pleasant mobile experience. Fortunately, eSobi Mobile fails to disappoint. The UI is clean and features every sorting ability you could ever hope for. In the week or so I have been testing eSobi Mobile, I have been impressed by the depth the application has, even though it isn’t much more than an organizational tool for all your mobile content. Clicking on an article will take you to a summary of that article, and if you want to read more it will launch an in-app browser to take you to the full story.

eSobi Mobile gives you access to the last 20 or so episodes from a selection of popular podcasts. Users can download entire podcasts right from the eSobi app to their SD card so you can listen to the podcast using whatever music player application you happen to like/have installed.

Now, it must be said that content does not update automatically as far as I can tell. Whenever I’ve selected a stream of content, I have had to click the refresh button to get eSobi to load new stories. The refresh button at least is conveniently located at the bottom left hand corner of the screen, so having to refresh manually is only a slight inconvenience rather than a dealbreaker.

As someone who has been somewhat frustrated with the lack of a single application to manage my entire news and blog stream from something outside of the browser, eSobi Mobile has the potential to be the one content management app to rule them all. Best of all: It’s free to try out for 30 days, but will set you back $5.99 if you want to keep it.

Pros

  • Ability to manage multiple channels of information from a single application
  • Google Reader integration
  • Podcasts
  • Slick and easy to use UI
  • Can manage content from the PC application which easily syncs with your Android phone.

Cons

  • Have to manually refresh to update content
  • Somewhat frustrating to add content on the Android phone itself.
  • $5.99 price is a bit high for something that is free or better managed in other services.

Final Verdict

If you’ve been looking for a single application to manage your entire RSS feed, and other apps currently available aren’t meeting your needs, this app is certainly worth a download to try out for 30 days. I personally think the application is a very good Android RSS reader solution, but find the $5.99 price point a bit difficult to swallow for this one. As usual, I encourage you to check it out for yourself today, as you might feel it’s worth the $6. eSobi is currently available for all 1.5+ Android platforms.

Samsung Captivate launches on AT&T

Posted on July 21, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

AT&T customers rejoice! The Samsung Captivate (a Galaxy S phone) has launched this weekend on AT&T’s network.  I know, this post comes pretty late, but I wanted to get a little hands-on time with the new Captivate before sharing the news.  If in the last eight hours you jumped ship and moved your number over to another carried just because AT&T didn’t have any appealing Android phones, you might want to think about taking advantage of that 30 day termination policy that most carriers offer.

The new Samsung Captivate on AT&T is one of the best Android phones currently available in the U.S. market.  AT&T is selling the new phone for $199.99 with a new two year agreement bundled with a required data plan.  Those willing to buy the phone without signing their life away on the dotted line will be required to pay $499.99.

The phone itself is a little different than the Samsung Vibrant which launched on T-Mobile late last week.  Rather than having straight edges with rounded corners, the captivate features straight edges on the side of the phone while the top and bottom edges curve outward. The back side of the phone has a unique design as well.  The carriers probably chose to have different bodies on the phones so that they could maximize their revenue from accessory sales.  On the software side, Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 UI is pretty much identical to what we have seen on the Vibrant, but there are a few color tweaks that are barely noticeable.

If you’ve in the market for an Android phone on AT&T’s network, the Samsung Captivate should be at the very top of your list.  The 1GHz Hummingbird processor with dedicated GPU, Android 2.1, and Samsung’s 4 inch Super AMOLED display truly make the phone stand out from the competition and will definitely give AT&T customers a great rival to go head-to-head with the iPhone 4.

Feel free to let us know if you’ve picked up the Samsung Captivate already and what your initial thoughts are so far.
