Samsung Galaxy S begins global domination, sell 200K units in South Korea

Posted on July 07, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

We still have a few weeks before the Samsung Galaxy S makes its official debut on U.S. service providers, but it looks like Samsung is already excited about the huge success the phone has had in Korea.  Samsung has already sold over 200,000 units of the phone in South Korea alone and since the Android 2.1 equipped device has been on sale in many European countries for nearly a month already, it may be safe to say that the Galaxy S sales has already surpassed the 1 million units threshold.

Though the sales figures aren’t as high as Apple’s 1.7 million units of the iPhone 4 on opening weekend, Samsung is on track overtake the iPhone 3GS which has only sold 800,000 in South Korea in the past eight months.

Samsung is the second largest cell phone manufacturer on the globe, but they have always trailed in the smartphone sector. The Samsung Galaxy S is their ticket to success in 2010 and will definitely go a long way in helping Samsung move up a spot of two in the global smartphone sales ranking.  Once the Galaxy S hits store shelves at all four major carriers in the U.S. and the other 110 nations across the planet, the Galaxy S is surely destined to be the top selling Android handset of the year.

Logitech Revue clears the FCC with new details revealed

Posted on July 07, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Google TV is coming this fall and the Logitech Revue will be the first companion device available. We have learned several details about the set top box (it will run Android 2.1, support Flash 10.1, include Google Chrome Browser 5.0), but most of the hardware specs are still unknown.

Thanks to a recent FCC filing, we now discover several new details via some internal and external pics. The Logitech Revue features a Gigabyte motherboard (GA-SBKAN2), 1.2 GHz Intel Atom processor (Z515), and 4 GB of memory. On the back of the device we can see 2x HDMI (in and out), 2x USB 2.0, ethernet, optical audio out, and what appears to be Control A1 (or Control S) ports. The Revue also features built in WiFi.

Logitech must be really excited about the Revue because it will allow them to sell tons of their accessories to expand the functionality of the device. The company’s Harmony remote will work with the device along with several controllers, speakers and their webcams.

The Revue will almost certainly support HD video calling from your living room. Logitech just released their HD Pro Webcam (C910) which records in 1080p and can make video calls in 720p. I expect Logitech will also add support for their existing line of webcams.

No price point has been announced, but we expect the Revue will debut at under $499.

Rock’Em Sock’Em augmented reality bots on Android

Posted on July 07, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Qualcomm recently introduced their Augmented Reality platform and SDK in order to enable the next generation of vision-based augmented reality applications for Android. The company is sponsoring a $200k developer challenge to encourage the use of their new platform and teamed with Mattel to demo the technology.

The team at the new Qualcomm Augmented Reality Game Studio, established at Georgia Tech University, showed off a Rock’em Sock’em game that mixes both real-world and rendered visuals to create a unique gaming experience.

Players just point their phones at a printed arena map and the robot characters are displayed in full 3D. The technology uses the compass for location, so you can move around the play area and the 3D objects will turn with you.

Unity Technologies also announced they would be integrating Qualcomm’s AR platform into their upcoming Unity Pro for Android, which will allow developers to quickly and easily create augmented reality games for Android.

T-Mobile to double HSPA+ speeds in 2011?

Posted on July 07, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

T-Mobile is currently upgrading their 3G network to HSPA+ which they say offers “4G speeds” and new details reveal the carrier might double its performance in 2011.

The current implementation of HSPA+ that is being rolled out has a theoretical max of 21 Mbps, but a leaked slide from a recent T-Mobile manager’s meeting in Seattle shows that could double to 42 Mbps by next year.

The major advantage of HSPA+ is that it’s fully compatible with existing HSPA 7.2 devices, which includes T-Mobile’s entire Android lineup. T-Mobile customers in HSPA+ markets are already reporting download speeds that are faster than what we have been able to achieve on Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network.

By the end of 2010, T-Mobile hopes to cover over 100 markets and 185 million people. The carrier is also aiming to have their first HSPA+ handset in the second half of this year.

Features and benefits of T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network include:

  • Theoretical capability of peak download speeds of up to 21 mbps
  • Theoretical capability of peak upload speeds of up to 5.7 mbps
  • You don’t have to buy a new phone to take advantage of the new network—many existing T-Mobile 3G phones and laptop sticks work too
  • Runs on state-of-the-art fiber optic technology
  • Up to 3 times faster than our competitors standard 3G networks
HSPA+

T-Mobile could deliver HSPA+ 42 Mbps in 2011.

Android boosts HTC profits by 33 percent in Q2

Posted on July 07, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

HTC’s numbers for the second quarter have just rolled in and it looks like the leading manufacturer for Android is doing quite well.  Profits for the second quarter were up 33 percent from last year, with net income of $268 million on $1.88 billion in revenue.

In the last five trading days, HTC shares have risen 20 percent.

While it’s nice to see the huge increase in profits, we’re pretty sure that HTC is also stoked with the $1.88 billion number as well since it is the highest quarterly revenue number HTC has ever posted.  HTC hasn’t broken down their revenue by mobile platform, but we are pretty certain that Android accounts for the majority of HTC’s revenue and profit increases.

A year ago, HTC only had thee Android phones under its belt (HTC Dream, Magic, and Hero).  Today, HTC boasts a lineup of over a dozen Android powered devices, many of which are loaded up with some of the most cutting edge technology available.

The extra cash should definitely be enough to fund quite a few more innovations in HTC’s upcoming phones.  Suddenly, those rumors of HTC handsets with mind-bending specs don’t seem so far out of reach.
