While most of us are eager to see what new Android phones are right around the corner, Cisco would like to remind us that Android is a whole lot more than a simply cell phone OS.  The new Cisco Cius is an “ultra-portable, mobile collaboration business tablet that offers access to essential business applications and technologies.”

LAS VEGAS – June 29, 2010 – Cisco today unveiled Cisco Cius, a first-of-its-kind mobile collaboration business tablet that delivers virtual desktop integration with anywhere, anytime access to the full range of Cisco collaboration and communication applications, including HD video.

Cisco Cius is an ultra-portable device weighing just 1.15lbs (0.52kg) that extends the productivity benefits of Cisco collaboration applications to a highly secure mobile platform. In addition to full telepresence interoperability, Cisco Cius offers HD video streaming and real-time video, multi-party conferencing, email, messaging, browsing, and the ability to produce, edit and share content stored locally or centrally in the cloud.

Based on the Android operating system, Cisco Cius is an open platform for communication and collaboration whose form factor and applications are designed to more securely connect employees on-the-go with the right people in real-time, and to provide those workers with the ability to access and share the content they need from any place on the network.

Reports of bricked handsets force Sprint to pull HTC EVO 4G update

Posted on June 30, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Remember that 1.47.651.1 update for the HTC EVO 4G that we told you about yesterday?  Apparently, Sprint and HTC have pulled it down from their servers due to some technical issues and reports from customers that the update has bricked their precious EVO 4G.

Some users who reported the issue may have been running a modified or unofficial ROM but others have claimed to have issues on the stock build that Sprint rolled out just after the launch of the HTC EVO 4G.  Many HTC EVO owners explained that they installed the update twice (update notification reappeared after the initial update was complete) before their handsets became inoperable.

We haven’t experienced any issues with our EVO 4Gs after the update, but feel free to let us know if your phone is no longer working or if things are simply acting up.

While the vast majority of consumers successfully downloaded and installed the most recent HTC EVO 4G software update, we have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further. We expect to be able to resume software updates shortly.Sprint Customer Service

AT&T and T-Mobile Nexii receive another OTA update (FRF85B)

Posted on June 30, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Some Nexus One owners began receiving another update for Android 2.2 (now at build number FRF85B). The update is being sent out over-the-air to users with the last build FRF83, but some AT&T users on the older Android 2.1 EPE54B also reported they received the latest firmware.

I think that since the AT&T and T-Mobile versions are both receiving the same build number, there could be a chance this is the final version. Most of the previous updates were incremental versions, but this is the first one to go from Android 2.1 to the latest version of Android 2.2.

The best way to upgrade your Nexus One to the latest firmware build is to just check for it. Browse to Settings > About phone > System updates and you should receive a notification to download the update.

If you want to manually install it, grab the correct file below.

  • To go from FRF83 to FRF85B download this file, rename it update.zip and flash it.
  • To go from EPE54B to FRF85B download this file, rename it update.zip and flash it.

To manually install Android 2.2 FRF85B on the Nexus One, perform the following steps:

  1. Download the official Android 2.2 firmware for your current build (see links above)
  2. Copy the file to your MicroSD card and name it update.zip (Pro tip: not update.zip.zip)
  3. Power off your phone.
  4. Hold down the VOLUME DOWN button and power it back on.
  5. The phone will now search for files like PB00IMG.zip, etc. This is normal. Scroll down to recovery and press the POWER button.
  6. When you see the “/!\” symbol, press the POWER button and the Volume Up button at the same time. You should be presented with a menu and one of the options should be “Apply sdcard:update.zip”.
  7. Use the trackball to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.
  8. When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.

Let us know if you notice any differences. I’ve only had it installed for a couple hours and I have seen no major changes yet. The change log states it brings updates to the browser for Flash, support for Exchange in Calendar, a speed boost, and tethering options (all of which have been available in earlier builds).

Nokia Bots updated, new location-aware Contact Bot added

Posted on June 30, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Greetings from the Nokia Bots team!

We’ve been pleased to see all the buzz generated by Nokia Bots in the Beta Labs community, and are very exited about your feedback and many, many great suggestions. Thank you all!

We went through all the ideas, and after a careful evaluation picked the ones that we think will take Nokia Bots a big step ahead. After a couple of months of hard work, it is now time to give something back: a new release, which includes a new location-aware Contact Bot, developed based on Nokia Beta Labs user feedback.

Contact Bot is an adaptive contacts bar for your homescreen. It learns your most frequently called contacts in a similar manner as Shortcut Bot learns your most frequently used apps. This Bot was suggested by many Beta Labs users, and we think it is a great idea already as such! However, there’s another treat in the new Contact Bot, which only appears after a few days of use: we made it learn your “home” and “work” places. This takes Nokia Bots to a whole another level, as now it is not only what you do with your phone that gets learned, but also where it all happens. Also this location-awareness was suggested by you, and we are very exited to hear your feedback.

So do try it out, and report back to us what you think. Please remember – as the whole Nokia Bots concept – the location-awareness is still experimental, and we would very much like to hear your experiences on how well it captures your places. We can already see many great opportunities with learned locations, and this is our first step to that direction.

Another much requested feature was support for more phone models. Due to high demand we made a thorough analysis on this topic, but in the end we were unanimous on the results: due to many technical limitations of the homescreen implementations, Nokia Bots cannot be reasonably ported to other current Symbian touch screen phones. Also the option of not using homescreen widget based user interface was examined, but we were not satisfied at all with the user experience of pop-up style of notifications. Therefore we decided to concentrate our efforts in taking Nokia Bots functionality further with a new Bot. This is not good news to many of you, but hope you understand.

The new Nokia Bots release is available for downloads immediately, so spread the news and if you’ve got a Nokia N97 or N97 Mini in your pocket, try it out now yourself!

Regards,

Ari, on behalf of the Nokia Bots team

Introducing Nokia Video Cuts – Find your favorite scenes with ease

Posted on June 30, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

Written by Marshall Chang, Nokia Research Center, Beijing

We know that many of you take advantage of your large touchscreen smartphones to watch videos or movies on the go.  Unlike watching DVD’s at home, however, I’m sure you’ve discovered that the current video galleries do not allow you to jump to your favorite scene or where you left off.  Instead you have to start from the beginning of the video and fast forward to that scene.

Today, we are pleased to announce Nokia Video Cuts to address this specific problem.  Developed by Nokia Research Center, Beijing, Nokia Video Cuts can replace your current video gallery and provide a key missing feature to make your viewing experience more convenient.

Nokia Video Cuts uses key frame extraction technology to separate a video’s key scenes, allowing you to jump from one scene to another with one simple click.  The Nokia Video Cuts video gallery organizes your videos by title and also uses thumbnail images for easy searching.  Full kinetic scrolling is smooth and snappy, and just like other video galleries, Nokia Video Cuts offers all the same functionality you would expect, like volume adjustment and full screen viewing.

Nokia Video Cuts is an experimental beta and we are currently evaluating how to take it further.  So if you’re interested, download the application and let us know what you think.

Thanks!

Amazon Kindle App released into the Android Market

Posted on June 29, 2010 by Mobile Tweaks

In a bit of surprising news, Amazon today announced that an Android application for their popular e-book Kindle service is now available on the Android market for your download pleasure.

The Kindle application does require Android 1.6 or greater, and allows users to search, browse, and purchase e-books from Amazon’s 600,000+ book database, right from the comfort of their Android phone. Users will not, however, be allowed to view or purchase Amazon’s newspaper, magazine, and blog database.

What’s great about the Kindle application is that it remembers what page you left off on, and automatically pulls you to that page when you launch any of Amazon’s Kindle applications, be it Kindle for PC, iPhone, or on your Kindle device itself. This is quite convenient and gives it one step up on several other e-book reader applications out there today. Add on Amazon’s impressive book database and you have yourselves one killer, must-have e-book application for the Android platform.

But don’t take our word for it, if you have Android 1.6+, go and download the Kindle app for yourself. The application itself is free, though most of the premium books will set you back about $10.

More information on Kindle for Android can be found an Amazon’s Kindle for Android website.
